I’m currently taking a photography class through the Chicago Foto League, with Lali Khalid. It is called The Portrait, and it runs ten weeks. The first week is called The Encounter.
For the first class the assignment was to encounter someone and photograph them. To approach a person you had not met, and make an image.
Throughout the class we have been discussing the notion of the photographer, and the responsibility of the photographer.
How do you connect with a subject?
What is the relationship between you and them, and what is the story you wish to tell?
There is a narrative component to much of this.
